Q III Observe the map of the Chola kingdom during Rajendra I reign. Answer the
following questions
1. Name three places under Chola rule in the south of India as shown in the
map above. –
 Thanjavur, Kanchipuram, Nagapattinam, Gangaikonda Cholapuram

2. Evaluate Rajendra I naval expedition to Sri Vijaya (present day Indonesia).

It was the greatest of the achievements of Rajendra I. He captured anumber
of places. The expedition was undertaken to clear hindrances caused by Sri
Vijaya to Indian traders and to increase trade with China. A number of places
like Kadaram, Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra were occupied.

4. Name the king who defeated the last Chola ruler. –

5. Analyse the trade route of the Chola kingdom shown in the map above. The
trade was majorly carried out by the searoute. (roadroute, railroute, searoute).

Q IV The Cholas had an efficient revenue system. Compare this system with the
system of taxation present day India. Do you find any similarity between the
two? Discuss and write.
The major source of income in the revenue system then and now is the land
revenue. The governments of today just like the Cholas have given land
rights. Recording of the revenue dues is maintained. Tolls , professional taxes,
house tax, taxes on mines and forests are collected even today
Q V Appraise the temple architecture of the Cholas with regards to the following
points
· Basic Style –            Dravida.
· Significant feature – Building of five to seven storeys known as the vimana,
above the chief deity room called the garbhagriha.
· Gopurams – Richly ornamented gateways were known as gopurams.
Gopurams became more and more elaborate in course of time.
· Two temples – Temple of Kailasanath at Kanchipuram, The Brihadeshvara
temple at Tanjavur, temple at Gangaikondacholapuram. (Any two)
