1. What did his mother reprimand Parv about?
a. Watching the rain.
b. Getting wet in the rain.
c. Leaving the bathroom tap open.
d. Messing up his bedroom.

a. expensive
b. cheap
c. feasible
d. long

3. A major portion on our planet is ________________.
a. freshwater
b. saltwater
c. glaciers
d. salt

III. Read the following extracts and answer the questions that follow:
1. “Different research institutions are continually looking for new methods and
better solutions to overcome the obstacles that exist in the large scale use of
the process. It will indeed be a boon for countries that are facing severe
drought.”
a. What will be a boon for countries that are facing severe drought?
The process of desalination will be a boon for countries that are facing severe
droughts.

a. What will be a boon for countries that are facing severe drought?
The process of desalination will be a boon for countries that are facing severe
droughts.
subdued tone expensive glaciers
frequent hygiene boon

b. Why are different research institutions continually looking for new methods and
better solutions for desalination?
Different research institutions are continually looking for new methods and better
solutions for desalination to help the regions which are most affected by water
scarcity.
c. Identify he word which means ‘a thing that prevents progress’.
obstacle

2. “Tell me, why can’t we use the water from the sea? There is so much water!” he
enquired.
“We can, but it is an expensive process,” answered his brother.
“I know. We have to remove the salt to make it fit for drinking.”
“The process is called desalination,” replied his brother.
a. What is desalination?
The process of removing salt from sea water to make it fit for day to day use is
called desalination.
b. What did Parv’s father ask him to do after breakfast?
Parv’s father asked him to read an article on desalination in the magazine.
c. Pick out the word which means ‘requires a lot of money’.
expensive

IV. Answer the following questions:
1. Why do we face acute shortage of water?
A major portion of water on the planet is saltwater, unfit for use by the human,
plant and animal population. Only a sliver of that portion is fit for drinking. Most
of that too exists in the form of glaciers. Hence we face an acute shortage of
water.
2. What are the two methods of desalination?
Reverse osmosis is currently the most common type of method used and
multistage flash distillation produces the maximum amount of desalinated
water.
3. How is the salt content in water determined?
The level of salt is measured in parts per million (ppm). Water that contains salt
levels less than 1,000 ppm is generally considered fresh water, and is safe to
drink and use for household and agricultural purposes.

V. Answer briefly:
1. The technology is expected to spread increasingly to other countries. Explain.
As human population continues to explode, the scarcity of fresh water resources
in many arid regions of the world and the consequent need for additional water
supplies will be increasingly important in the future. Today, desalination is a
process primarily undertaken by developed countries with enough resources.
Different research institutions are continually looking for new methods and better
solutions to overcome the obstacles that exist in the large scale use of the
process. It will indeed be a boon for countries that are facing severe drought.
