	Temperate deciduous forests experience four distinct seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter. During autumn, the leaves change their colour and they lose all their leaves during the winter season. During spring, new leaves grow. The trees are of medium height with a thick trunk and broad leaves. Oak, ash, elm, maple, redwood, poplar, chestnut, cherry, sweet gum, huckleberries and rhododendrons are some of the species commonly found in these forests.

	The Government has upheld the cause of women empowerment and women’s movement in many ways. It has passed many laws that abolish social evils such as sati, dowry, child marriage, female foeticide, female infanticide, etc.  The Government has passed laws raising the minimum age of marriage to 18 years and legalising widow remarriage. The Government has taken steps to promote education which is one of the major causes of gender inequality in India. The Girl Child Protection Scheme was launched by the Government to protect the girl child. Laws have been passed that grant equal share to women in their husband’s and father’s property. Programmes have also been launched to increase economic opportunities for women.

	The Amazon Basin experiences hot and wet climate throughout the year’. Justify the statement.	(5)
	The daytime temperature in the Amazon Basin becomes intolerable due to presence of direct sunlight and high humidity; however, nights are comparatively cooler.  The average temperature varies between 25°C and 30°C.  The region experiences annual rainfall of over 250 cm throughout the year.  The rainfall is of convectional type and since it occurs mostly in the afternoons, it is often referred to as the 4 o’clock rain.  Since it is cloudy all-round the year, the humidity level also remains high.  In fact, there is not much difference between summer and winter temperatures.
