Q 1- What does the growth and development of a settlement depend on?
Ans- The growth and development of a settlement depend on suitable land, availability of water, favourable climate and fertile soil to dwell and carry out economic activities.

Q 2-What are the patterns of rural settlements?
Ans-  Nucleated, Scattered, Linear, Circular and Radial.

Q 3-What is the difference between rural and urban settlement?
Ans- a)  Rural settlements have lesser population and so are differently arranged in comparison to urban settlement which has highly dense population.
b) Economic activities in rural settlements are different, as they are basically primary like fishing, agriculture etc. Urban population is involved in secondary and tertiary economic activities.
c) Depending upon the local climate rural settlements design and construction is different whereas urban houses are mostly made of bricks n cement.
d) Average income of people living in urban areas is higher than those of rural areas and so have better settlements.
e) Urban settlements have better amenities, infrastructure, public utilities, etc. than the rural areas.

Q 4- Explain Port towns.
Ans- These towns flourish around natural ports or harbours from where extensive long distance trade is carried out. These have landing places for steamers and ships, warehouses and international transport arrangements, including custom offices, banking and insurance services.
For instance, Hong kong, Southampton, Marseilles, Mumbai, Singapore, Kolkata, etc.


Q 5- What are diversified towns?
Ans- Settlements keep evolving over time. As they grow and develop, they start performing new functions to cater to the needs of the people inhabiting the towns. Such townships perform a variety of functions, are reffered as diversified towns.
 Examples - Kolkata, New York, London.
