            The lone cowboy leaped from the saddle and took refuge behind the pile of rocks at the edge of the trail. Already arrows were whistling around him, and the war hoops of the Indians were loud in his ears.
            It would take all of “Quick draw” Thompson’s courage and determination to get him safely out of this peril. Not only was his life at stake, but those of the settlers sleeping peacefully in their log cabins in the lovely valley below. It was so long since there was an Indian rising that the Palefaces had become careless. Their guns were seldom to hand, and their look outs had begun to think that they were wasting their time peering out across the prairie for an enemy that never came. The Redman had chosen the time carefully. Lone Elk had seen to that!
