Question 1:
[multistage
flash distillation,
less than 1,000 ppm,
Saudi Arabia ,
glaciers/ ice,
Reverse Osmosis]
Question 2:
a.
Magazine
b.
expenditure involved
c. arid
regions
Question 3:
a. Three
fourths of the water on Earth is salt water. A large percentage of fresh water
is in the form of ice. The population is growing and so are the demands for
portable water.
Many
regions are dry and in urgent need of water. The large quantity of sea water
seems the
only option open to man.
Dumping
the waste from desalination plants which is high in salt content makes the process
more difficult. It can also harm ocean life.
A large
amount of energy is required to power desalination plants, which is a huge
expense.
Burning huge quantities of fossil fuels to obtain energy is a cause for
concern.
b. It is
expensive to transport the water from the ocean or the sea to desalination
plants
situated
in regions away from the coast or on a high altitude.
c. Nuclear
energy is potentially the most cost-effective energy source, but the public is
against a
nuclear power plant within the limits of towns and cities. So it remains
largely
unexploited.
d. New
methods and better solutions to overcome the obstacles that exist in the large scale use
of the desalination process is needed to ensure that people in arid regions are able to fulfill their daily
needs.
