levels less than 1,000 ppm is generally considered fresh water, and is safe to
drink and use for household and agricultural purposes.
V. Answer briefly:
1. The technology is expected to spread increasingly to other countries. Explain.
As human population continues to explode, the scarcity of fresh water resources
in many arid regions of the world and the consequent need for additional water
supplies will be increasingly important in the future. Today, desalination is a
process primarily undertaken by developed countries with enough resources.

ENGLISH- REVISION QUESTION BANK
1. Read the following passage carefully.
Earthquakes can cause the ground to shake and crack apart. Earthquakes can be very powerful, and if they occur in or near areas where people live, they can make buildings collapse, bridges sway, and roads buckle. But not all earthquakes are powerful enough to cause damage. In fact, earthquakes are happening all the time, on land as well as in the oceans. Most of the earthquakes are so mild that people don’t even feel them. An earthquake is the sudden movement of the earth’s crust. Earthquakes occur along fault lines, cracks in the earth’s crust where tectonic plates meet. They occur where plates are subducting, spreading, slipping or colliding. As the plates grind together, they get stuck and the pressure builds up. Finally, the pressure between the plates is so great that they break loose. Depending on how much pressure has built up, the ground may tremble slightly or shake
forcefully. Scientists describe the intensity of an earthquake using the Richter scale. It measures earthquakes on a scale of 1 to 10. People barely feel a magnitude 3 earthquake, and windows might rattle at magnitude 4.A magnitude 6 earthquake is considered major, causing houses to move and chimneys to fall. The most severe earthquake recorded had a magnitude of 9.5.

2. Read the following passage carefully.
Bees are flying insects that feed on
nectar and pollen. They are usually
yellow and black and covered in
fuzzy hair that makes collecting
pollen easier. A bee’s body is similar
to that of other insects – for instance,
an ant – with three major sections:
the head, the middle section called
the thorax and the last section called
the abdomen.
The head of a bee has five eyes for seeing and two antennae for
touching and smelling. Two sets of wings and three sets of legs can be
found on a bee’s thorax. Depending on the type of bee, the last set of
legs might have little sacs that store the pollen that the bee has
collected from flowers. Many types of bees have stingers. The bee
stinger is the most feared part of a bee, and for good reason. Filled with
poison, the stinger is a bee’s protection from danger. The stingers are
around 12 millimeters long. There are over 20,000 known bee species in
the world. The best known is probably the honeybee.
Honeybees live in beehives, which have a distinct order that helps
things run smoothly. At the bottom of the totem pole are the workers.
Workers are young female bees. Some of their main duties include
going out to find food (nectar and pollen), building the hive, and
keeping it clean. Honeybees will travel up to eight miles if necessary to
find nectar and pollen to bring back to the hive. Worker bees are
actually the only bees that ever do any stinging. When this does
happen, it is usually because they are trying to protect their hive from
harm. A bee rarely stings when it is away from the hive, but it might
sting if it senses danger. The lifespan of a worker bee is anywhere from 4
to 9 months.
The queen honeybee is the biggest bee in the hive. There is usually only
one per hive, and her job is to grow the family by laying eggs that will
become the next generation of honeybees. She lays over a thousand
eggs per day and can live anywhere from 3 to 5 years. When the time
comes for a new queen to take over, some larvae are placed in
special chambers to grow queen bees. After they hatch, they are
fattened up with royal jelly, a nutritious substance that worker bees
secrete. It usually takes about two weeks for a newly hatched female
bee to grow into a queen bee. The first female bee to become a
queen bee kills the other potential queen bees.
Male honeybees are called drones. They don’t have stingers, and they
don’t collect nectar or pollen. Their only purpose is to mate with the
queen. Several hundred drones can live in a hive at one time. As the
winter months approach, the males are kicked out of the hive in order
to make it easier for the queen and her workers to survive. Food needs
to be saved as there are fewer flowers to collect pollen and nectar
from. Less food means the drones are the first ones to go!

Computer Chap 7 - Computer Virus
7 Computer Virus
Que 1. Wht is a Computer Virus?
Ans :- A computer virus is a program which
is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and cause
interferences
with computer operation.
Que 2. What are the symptoms 0f a Computer Virus? Or
How do you find out if your computer is infected with a virus?
Ans :- if your computer is infected with a virus it
shows the following signs:
ÒFunctions slower than normal.
ÒResponds slowly and freezes often.
ÒFiles or folders gets deleted or changed without the
user knowledge.
ÒSee uncommon error messages, distorted menus, and
dialog boxes.
ÒNotice applications fail to work correctly.
ÒHard disk may get erased.
ÒFiles become bigger in size, thereby reducing disk
space
Que 3. Explain different types of computer viruses
in detail:
Ans:- Computer
viruses can be
classified into different types based on their origin, techniques, the types of
files they infect, the kind of damage they cause and the platform they attack.
The main
type of computer viruses are:
1) File Virus
:- File virus infects program files such as .exe.
.com etc. Once this virus gets active in the memory, it tries to infect all the
programs that are further loaded into the memory.
2) Macro Virus
:- It is a type of virus which infects the Microsoft Word and other
applications. Once infected repairing these files become very difficult.
3) Boot sector
or Master Boot Record(MBR) Virus:- This kind of virus infects the
first sector of a storage device which is used for loading the operating
system. It becomes active as soon as the computer is started.
4) Multipartite
Virus :- It is a combination of Boot and Program/file viruses. It
infects program files and when an infected program is executed, the virus
infects the boot record. When the computer is booted the next time the virus
from the boot record loads into the memory and then it starts infecting other
program files on the disk as well.
5) Polymorphic
Viruses :- A polymorphic virus is a self-encrypted virus designed to
avoid detection by a scanner. Upon infection, the polymorphic virus duplicates
itself by creating usable, albeit slightly modified, copies of itself.
6) Worms :- These
kind of virus makes copies of itself and spread to other computer through
network thereby showing down the traffic on the network. Able to spread very quickly makes them really
damaging. For ex. Blaster, Code Red and Sasser.
7) Trojan
Horse :- Not considered as virus as it cannot replicate itself. A
Trojan horse is a coded program which makes the existence of a virus by making its
appearance look normal while containing malicious utilities transparent to the
user. It may creates breaks in the security of the system by leaking
information through a backdoor. Generally used for online fraud and theft of confidential and personal data.
For ex. ‘Waterfall.scr’, ‘Beast’
Que 4. How to protect your computer from viruses?
ÒUpload and use antivirus software
ÒBe aware of the e-mails and
attachments you open
ÒCheck for updates on antivirus
software regularly
ÒMake sure antivirus software is
installed correctly
ÒEnable the Macro Virus Protection
in MS Office application and do not run macros unless you know what they do.
ÒUse email programs that have built
in spam filters.
ÒAvoid installing programs from
unknown sources.
ÒAlways keep a regular back up of
the your data to avoid any loss
Que 5. What is the use of Anti-Viruses Software?
Ans:-
Anti-Virus Software scans files on your computer and the computer memory for
known viruses.
Que 5. How does
Anti-Viruses Software work?
Ans:- if
the Anti-Virus program finds a virus, it may attempt to
§ Remove the
virus(clean the file),
§ Quarantine
the files(move the file to a safe area so that it cannot harm your system),
§ Delete the
file.
Since new viruses are being released continually, the
Anti-virus software needs to updated on a regular basis to that you have the
least definitions installed in your computer.
Que 6. Give few examples of Anti-virus Software.
§ AVG
§ BitDefemder
§ Kaspersky
§ AcAfee
§ Norton
§ Quick Heal
Que 7. Fill
in the Blanks.
1) A Boot
Sector virus infects the first sector of a storage device which is used
for loading OS programs.
2) ‘Waterfall.scr’
is an example of a Trojan horse.
3) Anti-virus software needs to be updated
to keep track of latest viruses.
4) Quarantine is a term
used to move an infected file to a safe area to that it cannot harm your
system.
5) ‘Code Red’
and ‘Sasser’ are example of worms.
6) The Melissa
virus or (1999) forced MS to temporarily shut down its email servers.
7) The I Love
You virus(2000) came as an email attachment which on double clicking
sent copies of it to everyone on the victim’s address book.
8) Code Red made
headlines(2011) when it slowed down internet traffic by replicating itself.

Computer - Chap 5 -Introduction to 'C' Language
1. Errors are
mistakes in program, which are traced by the compiler.
Que
13.Explain errors of C programs in detail.
Ans.
Errors are mistakes in program, which are traced by the compiler while
compilation. A program can only execute when all the errors are corrected.
Types
of errors:
1) Logical errors – occur when the
result we get is not correct because of the incorrect code logic.
2) Syntax : occur when the grammar of
the C language is not used properly.
For
ex
1. Typing Printf or print instead
of printf.
2. Forgetting a semicolon (;) at the
end of an executable C statement.
3. Mismatch of parenthesis.
Explain some common Errors:
1. Typing
Printf or print instead of printf.
2. Forgetting
a semicolon (;) at the end of an executable C statement.
3. Mismatch of
paranthesis.
Que 15. Explain Format
Specifiers.
Ans. Format Specifiers
are % sing followed by a letter which actually prints the value of the
variable. Following are the list of format specifiers used in C to print the
value of variables of different types.
